Why an Archive?
With the rise in banned media, dwindling access to representation and newly-acquired Queer rights being endangered, it is even more crucial that we preserve and continue to gather records of Queer history and its impact on society as a whole.Without archives, we may not know the lesbians who took part in creating/sustaining blood drives during the AIDS crisis, or why the L was brought to the front of LGBT.We need archives to preserve evidence of the hard work that is being done, evidence that Queer people have always been here, proof of risks taken and changes made. These archives not only work to preserve materials but to share and embrace visible representation of lesbians, sapphics, and other queer identities via;- film festivals
- social media
- bookfairs
- photography and art galleries
- highlighting lesbian artists/writers/photographers
- social gatherings and community engagement.June L. Mazer Archives in particular has a partnership with UCLA to share archives with students.
